The Kröller-Müller Museum is the reason to build a day around Hoge Veluwe National Park: a modern art collection of roughly 20,000 paintings and sculptures, plus more than 200 sculptures spread across one of Europe's largest sculpture gardens. It sits at Houtkampweg 6 in Otterlo, deep inside the park rather than in a town centre, so the visit is a half-day or full-day outing rather than an hour between other sights. This guide covers what to see first, how the opening days shape your planning, how long the gallery and garden each take, and how to arrive.

Where the museum sits in Hoge Veluwe National Park

The museum stands in the heart of De Hoge Veluwe, surrounded by heath and woodland, and its address is Houtkampweg 6, Otterlo. That location is the making of the place: the sculpture garden runs straight into the landscape, and the museum frames a visit as a whole day of art, nature and architecture. Treat the park as part of the ticket and the timetable, not as scenery you pass through on the way.

The museum publishes route, address and parking guidance on its own site for visitors arriving by car or public transport, so work out your onward leg from the park entrance before you set off, because the museum sits within the park gates.

Opening days and hours

The museum and sculpture garden open Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00 and are closed on Mondays, with extra Monday opening during the summer holidays and on two Mondays in the 2026 Christmas holiday, 21 and 28 December. Public holidays follow the same 10.00 to 17.00 hours, covering Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, 25 and 26 December, King's Day on 27 April and Liberation Day on 5 May, while 1 January is the one closure. A Monday city break therefore needs the museum moved to another day, or a summer trip; our Best Museums in the Netherlands guide places it against the country's other collections.

The museum flags that the exhibition 'Van Gogh, al onze schilderijen' requires an extra exhibition ticket with a start time on top of museum and park entry, at no additional charge. Everything else, including the sculpture garden, is open from 10.00. If the Van Gogh display is the point of the trip, book the timed slot first and build the rest of the day around it.

Van Gogh and modern art highlights to prioritise

Sponsored

The collection runs from Van Gogh to Piet Mondrian, with De Stijl works, a Futurist group built up from the 1970s with pieces by Giacomo Balla and Umberto Boccioni, and Cubist-influenced painting such as Fernand Léger's Soldiers Playing Cards. Start with the Van Goghs and Mondrians, then give the Futurist and De Stijl rooms a focused pass; the museum describes itself as a leading museum of modern art in the Netherlands, and our Best Museums in the Netherlands guide places it against the country's other collections.

One caveat matters before you count on a famous canvas: the museum states that Van Gogh's Terrace of a Café at Night was loaned for a major Van Gogh exhibition in Japan and was not on display at the museum until September 2026. The museum's own collection pages show which works are currently on display, so use them to check the pieces you most want to see rather than assuming a fixed hang. For more of his Dutch work, see our Van Gogh in the Netherlands guide.

The sculpture garden: scale, pace and the pavilions

More than 200 sculptures by artists including Aristide Maillol, Marta Pan, Jean Dubuffet and Barbara Hepworth are set out in the garden, which the museum calls one of the largest in Europe. Two architectural pieces anchor the walk: the Rietveld Pavilion, designed by Gerrit Rietveld for the 1955 Sonsbeek exhibition and rebuilt in the garden, and the Aldo van Eyck Pavilion from 1965–66, with parallel breeze-block walls and a translucent roof. In summer 2026 the Rietveld Pavilion holds 16 sculptures by Ruud Kuijer.

Allow real time here rather than treating the garden as a loop on the way out: the scale rewards a slow circuit, and the museum invites visitors to picnic on the grass. Pick a handful of artists you care about and let the rest be a wander, because trying to see all 200 closely will eat the gallery time. The garden keeps the museum's opening hours and closes at 17.00, so start outdoors if the weather is kind and save the rooms for later, or reverse it if rain is set in.

How long the museum and garden need

A realistic half-day gives you roughly two hours in the galleries and an hour in the sculpture garden, which covers the Van Goghs, a Mondrian room and a first pass at the outdoor works. A full day lets you add the pavilions, a proper garden circuit and a break at the museum's eating and drinking spots.

Whatever you choose, remember the park travel on either side of the visit: arriving, moving between gate and museum, and returning all come out of the same day. If you only have one spare day in Arnhem or Nijmegen, give it here and skip a second city museum; if you have two, pair the Kröller-Müller with a town-centre collection on a separate day. Our Best Museums in the Netherlands guide helps you choose that second stop, and our cycling in the Netherlands guide covers riding the wider Veluwe.

Tickets, park entry and booking online

The museum sells tickets online through its own tickets and prices page, where it publishes current prices. For the exhibition Van Gogh, al onze schilderijen you also need an extra exhibition ticket with a start time alongside your museum and park ticket; it costs nothing extra, and the rest of the museum and sculpture garden are open from 10.00. Book that timed slot with your ticket rather than turning up without one, and buy through the museum rather than a resale listing.

Travelling from the UK or US, the museum fits naturally into a Veluwe leg between Arnhem and Nijmegen, and its combination of gallery and landscape is what sets it apart from the city-centre collections in our Best Museums in the Netherlands guide. Book a morning slot, arrive with the park leg already planned, and keep the afternoon free for the garden.

Is the Kröller-Müller worth a full day?

Sponsored

Yes, if you give it the day: the Van Gogh and Mondrian holdings plus a 200-piece sculpture garden justify the trip to Otterlo on their own, and they reward slower looking than a rushed circuit allows. Go Tuesday to Sunday, book the Van Gogh exhibition slot with your ticket, and start in the garden while the weather holds. For money-saving options, see the Museumkaart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit the Kröller-Müller Museum on a Monday?

Generally no: the museum and sculpture garden are closed on Mondays. The exceptions the museum publishes are extra Monday opening during the summer holidays and two Mondays in the 2026 Christmas holiday, 21 and 28 December, from 10.00 to 17.00. If your trip starts on a Monday, plan the museum for another day or travel in the summer.

Which famous Van Gogh painting might not be on show?

The museum states that Terrace of a Café at Night was loaned for a major Van Gogh exhibition in Japan and was not on display at the museum until September 2026. Other Van Gogh works remain part of the collection, and the museum's collection pages show which pieces are currently on display. Check those pages close to your visit if one painting is the reason for your trip.

Do I need a separate ticket for the Van Gogh exhibition?

Yes. The exhibition Van Gogh, al onze schilderijen requires an extra exhibition ticket with a start time alongside your museum and park ticket, and there is no additional charge for it. The rest of the museum and the sculpture garden are open from 10.00. Book the timed slot with your ticket so the exhibition anchors your day.
